Shifting Sounds: Alva Noto - Xerrox Vol. 4

Alva Noto's sound transformation weaves electronics and orchestra into a new spectrum.

Carsten Nicolai, alias Alva Noto, has been one of the best-known names in the world of electronic music since the 1990s. This fourth part of his Xerrox series dates from 2020. Ensemble Modern, together with Alva Noto as a soloist, presents an instrumental version of Xerrox Vol. 4, but conceived as multimedia work in which the music is combined with video and light installations. Xerrox Vol. 4 analyses the concept of digitally copying source material and an endless reproduction of melodies takes place. A production process based on copies of copies. The sound is distorted in such a way as to render the link with the source material barely distinguishable. In this way a sonic spectrum of completely new sounds is created, and copies of originals become original works again themselves.
