The Illusion of Choice is a solo performance that paints a picture of the trials of 'legal' African migrants that navigate the Belgian administrative body. In a communal hotel, Tshimundu captures an image of the traumatic experiences brought forth by Belgian bureaucracy, that are dependent on skin colour and the initials on one's ID. Becoming 'Belgian' is no longer a matter of love, integration, or assimilation, but a necessary survival tool. Choice becomes illusory, and agency disappears.
Tshimundu is a Congolese writer. Writing begins as a therapy. He then adapts his writing to best tell the story to others. His practice is rooted in spoken-word, poetry, and film. A long residency at Zinnema allowed him to step out of his comfort zone, resulting in a solo performance that interweaves dance, monologue, film, audio and theatre.
