Against the backdrop of the rising suicide rate among farmers in India, Sanjeevani, a young farmer's widow, finds strength, joy and companionship in a group of strong women who, like her, lost their husbands to suicide. During sessions with a local psychologist, she finds the courage to overcome her grief, break social taboos and strive for financial independence and a better future for her children. As new suicides plague her community and test her resolve, she finds healing in confronting her grief and helping other peasant women like her in a highly patriarchal society.
Filmmaker Kinshuk Surjan comes to present his film in person in Antwerp. He will talk to Tom Cnudde of Loof en Bezen CSE, a self-harvesting farm in Wommelgem. The conversation will be guided by Greet Riebbels, communications manager at the Institute for Agriculture, Fisheries & Food Research (ILVO) .
