FOMU is proud to present the first major solo exhibition in Belgium of American artist Cindy Sherman. With over 100 works, ranging from the 1970s to today, the exhibition provides a deep dive into the career of one of the most influential contemporary artists.

**Anti-Fashion**

Spanning five decades and multiple floors, the exhibition *Anti-Fashion* explores Sherman’s long-standing fascination with fashion and how her personal artistic work intertwines with her fashion-related projects. Since the 1980s, she has collaborated with high-profile fashion houses like Comme des Garçons, John Galliano, and Balenciaga, as well as magazines such as *Vogue*, *Interview*, and *Harper's Bazaar*. However, unlike traditional fashion photography, Sherman's images often feature characters that are anything but glamorous. She deliberately pushes boundaries, questioning mainstream beauty standards.

*Cindy Sherman – Anti-Fashion* was organized by Staatsgalerie Stuttgart in close collaboration with Cindy Sherman's studio in New York and her gallery Hauser & Wirth.

**Who is Cindy Sherman?**

Cindy Sherman (born 1954) is known for using photography to explore identity and the portrayal of women in mass media. Since the 1970s, she has acted as the subject in her own photographs, transforming herself with makeup, costumes, and elaborate disguises. Drawing inspiration from the clichés we see in films, fashion, art, magazines, television, and online, she amplifies these stereotypes to absurd and often grotesque extremes. Through this, she challenges our deeply ingrained ideas about gender, beauty, and aging. Sherman’s work constantly reflects on the cultural moment, surprising us again and again with her evolving cast of characters. With humor and sharp insight, she forces us to confront the way we see ourselves and the world.
