In Matador, Pedro Almodóvar takes us into a dark world of passion, violence and secrets. The film interweaves the lives of Diego, a wounded matador with a perverse fascination with death, María, an aggressive lawyer who discovers her own desires and violent tendencies, and Angel, a young religious fanatic who becomes entangled in a psychosexual game of murder and guilt.
Almodóvar plays with themes of oppression, religion, and the thin dividing line between love, death and obsession, using the art of bullfighting as a symbolic device. The film ironically exposes the complex morality of post-Franco Spain, with the characters struggling with their own deep-seated desires and social constraints. The collaboration with Antonio Banderas, who plays one of his first major roles here, adds extra depth to the intricate web of seduction, violence and betrayal.
