First Spoken Word Festival in Flanders

In November, Ghent will transform into the vibrant heart of poetry and performance with the very first VIERNULVIER spoken word festival, Word of Mouth!

From November 4 to 10, we invite you to a week full of events, shows, discussions, and encounters, all centered around the art of spoken word.

The program is a blend of intimate readings for a select audience, large-scale shows, and premieres featuring musical performances. This makes spoken word an integral part of VIERNULVIER’s artistic identity, reflecting the growing popularity of the genre in Belgium over the past decade.

Word of Mouth is all about direct connection—the bond between people who understand and know one another. The festival looks back at the roots of spoken word, where community and connection were at its core. What once began as small, intimate stages has evolved, and this festival captures that transformation.

Listening session: 

During the Listening Sessions, we invite artists with a unique approach: instead of teaching them how to incorporate their own artistic signature into spoken word, they are given the freedom to choose a text to perform. This method encourages meaningful conversations, where the poem itself becomes the focal point of the discussion. We hope this leads to thought-provoking exchanges, offering new insights into the work and its interpretation.
