Kaza stems from a chance encounter. Kassy and Kenza meet during a traditional African dance course. In a vulnerable moment of relaxation and doubt, they strike up a conversation in a hotel room. That meeting turns out to be more than just a break; it becomes a safe space where both women find a bridge to a shared language through their respective disciplines: krump and hip-hop.
This encounter serves as fertile ground for shared reflections. As Black women from migrant backgrounds, both have faced external perceptions of their bodies and societal norms imposed on femininity. Kaza, which means “home” in Spanish, represents the union of Kassy and Kenza. Through this piece, they aim to offer a moment of solidarity—a way to “come home” again for themselves and their audience.
Their reclaiming of the body comes alive through neo-soul music, a style both women deeply cherish. Krump and hip-hop—two powerful, politically charged dance forms—are united on stage by Kenza and Kassy.
