Kelly Moran

She is in the top drawer with artists such as Oneohtrix Point Never, FKA Twigs and Kelsey Lu, so things are coming together for New York-based pianist, composer and producer Kelly Moran. She dares to cast aside the classical straitjacket with a contemporary and experimental approach to the piano.

For her latest album, Moves in the Field, she makes exceptional use of Yahama's Disklavier, a robotic acoustic grand piano. Moran skillfully combines her pianistic skills with Disklavier's technical capabilities, resulting in virtuosic and layered piano compositions. On top of that, she adds a wonderfully hypnotic and emotional layer. Moran constantly plays with the creative and sonic limits of the instrument, reinforcing her role as one of the most prominent contemporary piano composers.

One to watch, according to The Guardian. Internationally recognized vocalist, multi-instrumentalist and composer ganavya has attracted the attention of Quincy Jones and Esperanza Spalding. Most recently, she performed with Sault. Now she arrives with a nocturnal blend of spiritual jazz, South Asian classical musical influences and ambient.

For the album tellingly titled Like the Sky I've Been Too Quiet, released on Shabaka Hutchings' label Native Rebel Recordings, ganavya collaborated with Hutchings himself, Floating Points and LA multi-instrumentalist Carlos Niño, co-producer of the recent André 3000 album, among others. Doraiswamy's voice dances to the music as if she were en pointe. One for the year-end lists.
