Performance 1: Francesca Grilli
Record
In Record, a choir of Brussels youth sings from a ledge, a window, a balcony, balancing on the boundaries between what could be the inside of their home and an outside space.
As young people transition into adulthood, artist Francesca Grilli observes them confronted with many conflicting tensions. She believes that two figures best represent this tension, forming the basis of *Record*. On one side, she places a Hikikomori, a Japanese young adult who voluntarily isolates themselves in their room as an act of rebellion against the outside world. On the other side, we find a stuntwoman, whose body constantly defies gravity and death.
For over a year, Grilli engaged in conversations with various Hikikomori. Their confessions form the foundation of the composition for this choir. As this diverse group of Brussels youth sings, they try to hold onto their precarious position like superheroes. Between retreating and powerfully letting go, the atmosphere of the performance reminds us of the fear of falling and a strong desire to fly away.
This ambivalent tension—especially in a society where failure is one of the greatest taboos—is present in all those moments in our lives when we cling to a fragile thread, somewhere between two things, two decisions. The performance celebrates all those thresholds, moments of adversity and joy, of mixed feelings and bewilderment.
Performance 2: Sander Deckx
Zonderzeeër
In Zonderzeeër, a performance written and performed by Sander Deckx, the theater maker questions whether it is possible to blend into the crowd if you don't resemble the crowd. He explores whether blending in is necessary or desirable, how to deal with a fanfare that constantly follows you, the impact of others' gaze on you, and the difference between being looked at and being truly seen.
