With DAHOMEY, Mati Diop (ATLANTIQUE) creates a documentary about decolonization and restitution. Poetry, politics, and aesthetics intertwine in this surprising take on a timely topic. The film won the Golden Bear at the Berlin Film Festival.

In November 2021, 26 treasures from the Kingdom of Dahomey were about to leave Paris to return to their homeland, the present-day Republic of Benin. Along with thousands of other artifacts, they were looted by French colonial forces in 1892. But how should one relate to the treasures of their ancestors in a country that has moved forward during their absence? This debate rages among the students of Benin.

With an original blend of documentary and fiction, Mati Diop gives voice to a young generation. ‘Intriguing… An invigorating and enlivening film’ ★★★★ (The Guardian).
